"The medical malpractice environment affects the cost
of health care in that the premiums doctors pay for the coverage are passed onto health care consumers like other expenses. As the number of lawsuits brought against medical professionals rises so do premiums. Perhaps more importantly, in highly litigious parts of the country, medical professionals tend to practice defensive medicine, ordering extra tests and taking other extra-precautionary measures to protect against charges of medical malpractice. This too pushes up the cost of care." - Insurance Information Institute |
